Sunday 9th December will be the 20th anniversary of the Aberystwyth 10k. The race will start at 1pm and there will also be a Junior race.

You can still be involved in the 10k and thereby help raise money for local causes by volunteering. Lots of roles available: course marshal, handing out race numbers, handing out medals at the finish, bag drop, setting up, clearing up, etc etc. Please e-mail if you'd like to help! 

Entry fees £15 for affiliated runners, £17 non-affiliated.

 If you are running for a business or charity team, please make sure the team name is consistent for all team members - check the start list on the entry link above and amend using the link in your confirmation e-mail if necessary. First team to get 3 runners across the line is the winner!

 General race instructions

All race proceeds go to local charities but runners may also raise sponsorship for a charity of their choice - sponsor form links above.

NUMBERS AND TIMING CHIPS are to be collected on the day at Race Registration in the bandstand, any time from 10am to 12.45pm.

Numbers must be fixed to the FRONT of your vest. The timing chips are attached to the race numbers.

TRANSFER of numbers on-line can take place until the 30th NOVEMBER after which the personalised race numbers will be printed. After this date please inform the race director if you wish to transfer your number to someone else - on no account should anyone run under someone else's number without telling us, as this is against the rules of UK Athletics who provide our licence and insurance!!! Not to mention making a mess of our results.... 

WATER - there will be a water station half-way round and water at the finish line. Biodegradable cups will be used at the half-way station, 500ml bottles donated by PD's Diner will be handed out at the finish. If anyone prefers not to take a plastic bottle, tap water and biodegradable cups will be available at the bandstand.

BAG STORAGE - there will be a manned bag storage area in the bandstand.

FIRST AID - provided by St Johns Ambulance. If you are unwell, ask the nearest marshal to summon them.

HEADPHONES must not be worn as the route is open to other users. Anyone wearing headphones will be disqualified. Bone conducting headphones are permitted but please make sure you can hear marshals' instructions, bicycle bells, etc.

DOGS are not permitted to run with participants.

BUGGIES are not permitted due to the increase in the number of participants, tight turns in the course, and blind corners. 

CUT-OFF TIMES - there is no formal cut-off time, and we normally find that all runners complete the route in around an hour and a half, followed by the tail runner. However this is a race not a fun run, and while we admire and encourage slower runners who are doing their best, for the sake of the marshals, please don't dawdle deliberately - e.g. stopping to chat or take photos -  if you are the person(s) in last place! 

PRIZES - Podium prizes, Age-Group prizes, Team prize and Club prize to take place around 3pm in the Bandstand.

Cash prizes are awarded to the podium winners and to the fastest finishers (chip time) in each age category (5-year intervals, male and female). The Geraint and Michelle Evans "Dolphin Trophy" is awarded to the first business or charity team to get 3 finishers across the line. There is a separate prize for athletic club teams. 

The route is open to the general public so please be considerate.

There is a narrow section under a bridge with runners in both directions - SINGLE FILE here and keep left, it will be strongly marshaled!  

There will be tea, coffee and mince pies in the bandstand after the race, free to runners, marshals and supporters though donations are welcome!

The route

The start and finish are North of the bandstand, opposite the main entrance of the Marine Hotel.

The route goes to the South end of the prom, round the harbour, down the road under Trefechan Bridge, onto the red-painted cycle path, and follows the cycle path behind the football club and police station.

Continue on the right-hand track towards Starling Cloud and the 3k mark, then follow the path where it bears right, and turn right onto the footbridge leading to Min y Ddol.

Follow Min y Ddol to where it joins the main road at Pen y Bont hill, turn left down this road then sharp left under the road bridge. Immediately turn sharp left again up the ramp onto the pavement.

Follow the pavement all the way to Blaendolau gate, taking the short cut through Coed Aber.

The 5k water station will be on the grassy bit just as you go through Blaendolau gate.
Continue along the path and turn right just before the green footbridge, following the path round the playing fields and under the road bridge again. Keep straight on behind Morrisons then turn right on the gravel track past the entrances to Cae Ceredig and Ystwyth Surgery. Turn left at the main road and follow the pavement till it rejoins the cycle track at the police station, then the rest is the reverse of the outward journey!

Note that the 1km and 9km markers are in the same place, as are the 2km and 8km markers. The 3km and 7km markers are opposite each other on the cycle path / footpath respectively. The race will, of course, be fully marked and marshalled!

The Aberystwyth Charity 10k is a fast, flat race following roads and paths around the town that takes runners along the promenade, through the harbour, and around the Rheidol river's edge to finish back at the race registration.  At Carl Williams' instigation the race was first held in 1999. Since then it has grown into one of the most popular flat road races in mid-Wales. 

The first race in 1999 was jointly organised between Carl, Aberystwyth Athletic Club and Marie Curie Cancer Care to raise funds for the charity. It was an immediate success so the event continues and in 2001 Macmillan Cancer Support took over Marie Curie Cancer Care's role. The original route started outside Woolworths (now Poundland) in Great Darkgate Street and consisted of several laps around town. In later years, as the race grew, Race HQ was in Plascrug Leisure Centre and the route took runners to the outskirts of town around Blaendolau. 

In 2010 the race was adopted by the Cambrian News as part of their 150 year celebrations. 

In 2015 there had to be a new route - hourly trains replaced the 2-hourly schedule to Aberystwyth so there wasn't a safe "gap" for runners to cross the railway line. Increases in traffic also meant that the road crossings in the route caused massive traffic congestion, so a new route was devised to avoid major road crossings. 

The course records for the new route were set in the inaugural year, 2015, and have yet to be beaten!
